Raoul Cordier, who left Europe for Fort-Bongo, a colony in the tropics, is bored stiff there. Neither the shooting parties and explorations, nor his job at Traficona International Co. where he's now out of favour, can dissipate his bitterness and disillusion. He's feeling more and more isolated, when one announces the visit of the inspector general. Towards the end of the party, Raoul meets the inspector's daughter during a row which turns out tragically.
